Llamas are vulnerable to many of the same diseases as other livestock like cattle or sheep. As a wooly creature, your llama’s coat will need to be maintained. For those who are llama uninitiated, it can be easy to assume that llamas are a spitting hazard. Spitting is used as a defense mechanism and as a way of establishing hierarchy in a llama herd. Look for llamas that were raised by breeders with this knowledge in mind. In fact, there are several livestock that will do exceedingly well on your small-acreage farm.

Even after having babies, we continued hiking and backpacking, hauling our infants up mountains and across deserts and snuggling them into our sleeping bags at night. Huacaya alpaca have a birth weight of between 10 and 17 pounds (4.5 to 7.7 kilograms) and grow to an adult weight of between 100 and 190 pounds (45.3 to 86.1 kilograms). Adults stand 32 to 39 inches (81.2 to 99 centimeters) tall at the shoulder. Lastly, remember that even though llamas are relatively low-maintenance, they require frequent grooming to stay healthy. A barn is nice but not necessary for their comfort. A simple three sided run-in so they can get out of the elements is recommended.

Losses due to coyotes or dogs dropped to zero on half of the sheep ranches with llamas. I feel that the llamas should be a castrated male at least 2-1/2 years old. Younger males will work as well but it may take them longer to become fully effective. Llamas suitable for guarding may be purchased for $500 to $1,200 (or less).

Hay bales costs vary from $3 to $12 per 50-pound bale, depending on location and quality. For the shelter’s flooring, use concrete or packed dirt or clay. Rubber mats with small drainage holes work just as well but are a lot more expensive. Provide an ample, safe outdoor area for your llamas to roam, as well as a safe, indoor shelter to protect them against the elements. The recommended stocking rate is four llamas per acre. However, it’s important to note that this does not mean that two llamas can be kept on half an acre.

Their role was and is similar to that of the buffalo of the Great Plains in North America, with the difference being that alpacas are domesticated and buffalo were not.

Alpacas come from a harsh climate naturally so they are pretty tolerant of cold conditions but do not fair as well in extreme heat, hence the need for a shelter to provide shade. Here in FL, fans are a necessity and can provide some comfort to them during the highs of summer. Another key to keeping them comfortable during the hot summers is to take a water hose and wet their bellies and chests to bring their core body temperature down. Never wet the top of an alpaca back since it traps the heat in. Their earth-friendly padded feet do no damage to pastures, as found with other livestock.
